As bad as it might be to be objectified in general, is it still worse to be made an object of pity? Conversely, as powerful as any king might feel, does it feel even more powerful to be one who wells up with pity for others? To rule over many is one thing, but to be one who pities many, is that to feel the height of inner authority? When the majority of a group, community, or nation transitions from being objects of pity to fully-fledged subjects of pity, what happens next? Are they then apt to become proto-pioneers, seeking out new and more distant locations (and situations!) that are still unfortunate enough for their pity to thrive? Yes, yes, and yes. And observe: whenever a new land, said to be full of misfortune, is discovered, how often a veritable gold rush of pioneering pity ensues, galloping headlong to claim their share.

Perhaps empathy rather than pity would lead to a truly constructive, rather than destructive, type of help for those in need of such.
