Sex sells? Maybe still true, but do you know what is really hot these days? The apocalypse. The doom and gloom preachers of old have been replaced by—doom and gloom preachers of a new yet completely familiar variety. Crisis after crisis—and the heart of every message is “the end is coming soon!”
You ask, why preach this way? Well, for one, marketing executives (and those who take calculated business ventures) hate, hate, hate taking unnecessary risks and such apocalyptic preaching is a tried and true method for gaining followers—and, better yet, followers often willing to spend because what do they care about saving for tomorrow if the world is ending today! Obviously, here is a valuable demographic worth tapping into—and have you ever noticed how incessantly in need of funds these fear-baiting preachers always are?
Here is my contention: we don’t choose fear, it is a mechanism of control that has been injected into our system by a thousand different legacy sources. What would we choose if we were to make an active, conscious choice? I believe the answer is this: love, hope, a goal to build towards that gives each of our steps along the way a sense of intrinsic meaning!
We live in a generation starved for hope. And that is why I want to share with you the good news that good news is coming! I preach a gospel of “good news” that has not yet been written, and that it has not yet been written is good news in itself—because any of you, my friends, can be its writer! And here’s my deal to you: if you write it, I will preach it!
So, let us turn away from doom and gloom preachers. What a worthy goal to embark on for the rest of this decade—and beyond. Call me a “soon to bloom” preacher because that is the goal that I have given myself. Join me, how could we ever preach the apocalypse once we’ve learned how to become truly excited for the fruits and flowers of tomorrow’s garden? Good news and good blooms are coming!
