You have to meet any inspiration halfway. Move towards it with your windows open. Even better, become like a convertible, halving its shelter at the beginning of the search. How better to receive instantaneous notice from the heights? Maybe even the universe wasn't created from nothing - maybe it was God that took the very first orbit and then, on the move, the mother of all inspiration hit. Oh, the joy of sudden revelation springing into consciousness!
There is a rhythm to the creative act - there's the music and the dance - creative moments and new insights occur like dancing to some unseen beat. Multitasking is not recommended: attempting to create your own beat while simultaneously seeking to dance to it is difficult and can lead to distraction. It is far easier to find the beat and then create along with it. But neither am I advocating straightforward beat finding, nor a lifelong game of hide and seek. The beat may not be searching you out, but it is also not hiding - it's almost always there, audible in the distance, and often your search is really for the sources of white noise that are drowning it out. Sometimes these searches are long - but once - like a tracker dog - you've got your ears sniffed to the trail of the offending noise - progress happens quickly. You turn off, unplug, cover up, do what you have to do to minimize the extraneous noise - and then it's truly miraculous how suddenly that beat you long sought can appear. Even better when you find exactly what you didn't know you were looking for - but were!
When I say rhythm, I mean it! You have to move! Something may be heading your way, but you'll only find it by means of a head-on collision. It'll swerve out of your path like you were just debris left on a road otherwise. Even those things which orbit you will never take the initiative to arrange a meeting!
Inspiration, please note, doesn't just refer to artistic creation. Inspiration is the wind blowing you down the right path of your life. The feeling of assured steps walking downhill when at the same time you feel yourself gaining the high ground for a decisive battle soon to come.
